DOT and SAE compliant lighting, explained
Our headlights, tail lights and fog lights are built to meet U.S. DOT and SAE lighting standards. Here's what DOT and SAE mean, and what they don't.
- DOT
- The manufacturer certifies the light meets FMVSS 108, the federal standard for vehicle lighting.
- SAE
- The light is built to SAE International's lighting standards, which the federal standard references.
DOT: the federal lighting rules
The U.S. Department of Transportation sets the rules for vehicle lighting in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 (FMVSS 108). It covers how bright each light is, where the beam goes, what color it shows and how it's marked, so you can see and be seen without blinding other drivers.
SAE: the engineering standards
SAE International, formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, writes the engineering standards and test methods for vehicle lighting, and the federal rules reference many of them. The SAE mark means a light was built to those standards.
Compliant, not "DOT approved"
The DOT doesn't test or approve lights before they go on sale. The manufacturer certifies that each light meets FMVSS 108, and the DOT mark is that certification. NHTSA can test lights already on the market and order a recall if they fall short. You'll often see "DOT approved" online, but "compliant" is the accurate word.
Keeping your lights compliant
Have your headlights aimed after installation, and use the bulb types each light was designed for. Putting HID or LED conversion bulbs into a headlight that wasn't built for them can take it out of compliance.
Off-road light bars and kits are made for off-road and show use, not street driving. Lighting laws also vary by state, so check your local rules.

The brand has been in the aftermarket for more than 20 years, and every light is backed by a 1-year warranty with no-return warranty claims turned around in 24 to 48 hours.
Why do drivers choose Spec-D Tuning headlights?
Drivers choose Spec-D Tuning headlights for a stylish upgrade that works reliably day to day at an affordable price. That combination of modern styling, dependable function and real after-sale support, including a 1-year warranty with fast, no-return claims, is what Spec-D Tuning is known for.
What makes Spec-D Tuning lights reliable for everyday driving?

Each light is a direct bolt-on replacement made for specific vehicles, and Spec-D Tuning headlights, tail lights and fog lights are DOT and SAE compliant. Every light also carries a 1-year warranty, so if something does go wrong in that first year, the claim is handled quickly without returning the product.
How does Spec-D Tuning compare to premium headlight brands?
Spec-D Tuning offers the styling features premium brands are known for, like sequential turn signals, startup animations and LED DRL light bars, without the premium price tag. Premium brands charge premium prices, and they typically offer longer warranty periods. Spec-D Tuning is for drivers who want that look with dependable everyday performance at an affordable price, backed by a 1-year warranty with fast, no-return claims.
What warranty do Spec-D Tuning lights have, and how do claims work?
Every Spec-D Tuning light comes with a 1-year warranty that covers all manufacturer defects under normal conditions, and claims don't require shipping the product back. Claims are handled by visual confirmation: send photos or video that show the issue, along with the product's QC identifier (a sticker or QR code), and the claim is turned around within 24 to 48 hours. Keep your proof of purchase and the QC identifier where you can find them.
Will Spec-D Tuning lights fit my vehicle, and are they plug-and-play?
Spec-D Tuning headlights and tail lights are direct bolt-on replacements made for specific years, makes and models. Each listing states exactly what it fits, including whether your vehicle needs factory halogen or factory LED lights, so check your year and trim before ordering. Many plug straight into the factory connectors, and models with LED turn signals include the load resistors they need. Professional installation is recommended.
How fast do Spec-D Tuning orders ship?
Spec-D Tuning orders placed by 10 a.m. PT ship the same day, with tracking provided the same day. That turnaround is backed by more than 20 years of drop-ship experience.
Where can I buy Spec-D Tuning lights?
You can buy Spec-D Tuning lighting at specdtuning.com or through authorized Spec-D Tuning dealers across the United States. Buying from an authorized dealer ensures you get a genuine product covered by the 1-year warranty.
